Measure Examples

Here are a few examples, with possible ways to solve them using Measure.



How long is a million seconds?

  1. 1,000,000 sec Return (or 1e6 s Return)
  2. Click Convert (or type Command-K).
  3. If you wish, check the "Show All" box to see additonal conversions.


What's the diagonal of a 8-inch by 2-foot rectangle?

  1. 8 inches Return
  2. 2 feet Return
  3. Click the Equations button (or type Command-=)
  4. Double-click "Pythagorean theorem, solved for c".
    When you double-click the equation, it removes as many values as it needs from the stack & puts the result onto the stack in their place. (The resulting value is marked with a result bar along the left side.)
To examine an equation, click its name and choose Open Items from the Info menu (or type Command-D).


How wide is my time zone at my latitude?

Find 1/24 of the circumference of the earth, and multiply by the cosine of your latitude.
  1. Earth Return
  2. Double-click the value for "Circumference" in the 2nd column.
  3. 24 Return
  4. Click "÷" (divide), or type "/" Return.

  6. Double-click the "latitude" value in the 2nd column (not the word "latitude" in the first column).
  7. Bring the Stack window to the front (click it, or use Command-1).
  8. Choose "Cosine" from the Math -> Trig menu.
  9. Click "x" (multiply).

What country has the highest population density?

  1. Double-click "countries" in the Contents window. The list of countries contains some columns that aren't needed. Unless you have a very wide monitor, you'll want to remove them, as follows.
  2. Click in the "area" column, and then choose View > Remove Column "area".
  3. Click in the "population" column, and then choose View > Remove Column "population".
  4. View > Add Column > population density.
  5. If necessary, reverse the direction of the sort, or scroll to the bottom of the list.
If you prefer to type, you can directly ask for a window with only the column you want:
  1. population densities of countries Return
  2. Click in the "population density" column header (or the comparison column header) to sort.
  3. If necessary, reverse the direction of the sort, or scroll to the bottom of the list.


How much would I weigh on Mars?

Multiply your mass by Mars's surface gravity.
  1. Enter your mass in, say, pounds* or kilograms, such as 150 pounds Return.
  2. Mars Return
  3. Double-click on the "surface gravity" value in the second column.
  4. Bring the Stack window to the front (click it, or use Command-1).
  5. Click "x" to multiply.
*Measure considers "pounds" to be a unit of mass. If you ever need to use pounds as force (as it technically is), the unit "pounds-force" is available.

If you prefer to type more:

How big is a 5-acre circle?

  1. Double-click "equations" in the Contents window.
  2. Double-click "area of circle". The equation is displayed in a new window.
  3. Double-click in the blank Value for the Area variable.
  4. Type 5 acres Return.
Measure solves the equation for the remaining variable and displays the answer.
